Douglas R. Carlson of Minneapolis served as the 62nd international president of Sigma Chi Fraternity from 2001 until 2003. For Carlson, this event marked the culmination of nearly three decades of dedicated service to the Fraternity.
Carlson graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1973. As an undergraduate, he was a true workhorse for the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Sigma Chi. During those years, Carlson served the chapter as vice-president for three terms, and as secretary, new member educator, historian, chapter editor, and house manager.
Carlson has also been a very active alumnus within the Fraternity. The Minnesota and St. Paul alumni chapters have benefited greatly from his involvement. Over the years, Carlson has been president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. In addition, he has served the Minnesota House Corporation in many capacities, including president and treasurer. He has also chaired and served on many key Greek alumni committees at the University of Minnesota.

“I joined the PAC because I think it is important to give back to something that supports the Greek system that has given so much to me. Alpha Delta Pi has provided me with multiple opportunities of leadership, friendship, and ways of giving back to the community. I believe it is important to support congressmen and women that support the Greek community and ensure they stay in office.”

“I joined the PAC because I have watched it strengthen Greek presence on Capitol Hill. It also provides opportunities for our students and alumni in D.C. to attend events with direct access to members of Congress. The Fraternity and Sorority PAC is starting to make a name for itself as one of the top higher education PACs in Washington, which is quite an accomplishment, and I hope that all Greek students will want to be a part of that!”

“I believe that the Fraternity and Sorority PAC will help draw attention to the issues that are plaguing fraternities and sororities on college campuses across our nation. Furthermore, it is a way for all Greek members to unite together demonstrating that they care about what is going on in our country. I am proud to be a part of a PAC that ensures that the Greek community will be able to benefit future Greek members.”

“As the 2008 summer intern for the FSPAC, I have been able to truly see how far the PAC has come in its goal to present a positive image for the Greek community to our elected representatives in Washington. The PAC has afforded Greek students across the nation amazing opportunities to engage in face-to-face dialogue with members of Congress and interact with some of the nation’s most prominent leaders, inspiring them to achieve more. The PAC has also supported a bipartisan slate of Congressional candidates, and has become a substantial and influential presence in D.C., which is something, as a member of the Greek community that I feel passionate about being a part of.”

“Representing the PAC on the Congressional Hill was one of my greatest experiences. I was grateful for the privilege to serve the Greek Community in our determination for tax free donations to chapter houses. I recently donated to the PAC to support the cause, knowing my contribution will be well spent.”

“As a UCLA student and current President of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity, I understand first-hand the significance of the persistent efforts of the Fraternity and Sorority PAC. The commitment to building a more positive presence in Washington D.C. for Fraternities and Sororities across the nation allows college students like myself to continue our growth as young adults within our respective organizations. The Fraternity and Sorority PAC is a valuable asset for all Greeks nationwide, and I welcome the opportunity to offer my support as a donor.”

“The result of a fatal fraternity fire was the reason why I joined the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC). The FSPAC supports policy issues that: change federal tax codes to promote charitable giving to benefit fraternity members and to improve student housing and safety on college campuses. My fraternity brother, Ryan J. Stewart lost his life in a fatal fraternity fire that could have been prevented if our house was equipped with a fire suppressions system. With the combined efforts and resources of the FSPAC and Greek chapters around the country, future incidents like this can be prevented.”

“While participating in the lobbying efforts in April, I learned so much about what the Greek community can do for an individual, but more importantly, what we can accomplish when we work together. It was truly inspiring to see everyone come together and work towards a common and very important goal. After that experience, I am confident that we, as a community, can accomplish so much more, which is why I decided to join the Fraternity & Sorority PAC.”

“I joined the PAC because I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to witness how effective the PAC and its money could be during the NIC lobbying efforts in April and I realized how much the issues that the PAC lobbies for affect almost every college student. Furthermore, in a particularly vicious political climate and election cycle, these issues are truly bi-partisan, which is incredibly refreshing. In the end, the money I contributed to this PAC will make a difference in my life and in student’s lives for years to come.”

“Being a college student, I am often exposed to the stereotype that young people today are indifferent and ignorant when it comes to political issues or that we care about politics, but we do not do enough to let our voices be heard. I don’t believe these stereotypes for a second. I CARE. College students CARE and being a part of the PAC demonstrates this. Students want to do whatever they can to support the candidates that will fight for issues that affect us in Washington and becoming a part of PAC is a great way to have a say in the political process.”
